Disclaimer and terms of use

Our simulators, data and analysis are experimental. They are not official information and must not be used for planning, safety or professional decisions.

Global Systems Lab publishes interactive simulators, live data views and written analysis (Transmission) for research, education and general interest. By using this site you accept the terms below. If you do not accept them, please do not use the site or its content.

1. Experimental research, not official information

Everything on this site, including the simulators, their outputs, the maps and charts, the data we display or offer for download, and the interpretation in our reports, data briefs and announcements, is experimental. It is produced by an independent research studio and has not been reviewed, endorsed or approved by any government agency, regulator, standards body or emergency service.

Our content is not an official forecast, warning, advisory, hazard assessment, statistic or determination of any kind. It must not be used, alone or as a principal basis, for:

  • emergency, evacuation, public-safety or life-safety decisions;
  • official, regulatory, planning, zoning, permitting, engineering, construction or infrastructure decisions;
  • navigation, aviation, maritime or other operational decisions;
  • insurance, underwriting, lending, investment, trading or other financial decisions;
  • medical, health, legal or other professional decisions;
  • any purpose where an error, delay or omission could cause injury, death, damage or loss.

2. Use official sources for safety

For weather and flood warnings in the United States, follow the National Weather Service. For earthquakes, consult the US Geological Survey and your national geological survey. For tsunami information, consult the US Tsunami Warning System or your national warning centre. Always follow instructions from local emergency management and authorities. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.

3. Third-party data

Many views and posts use public data from third parties, including the US Geological Survey, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and its National Weather Service and Aviation Weather Center, and other scientific sources named on each page. We retrieve, process, summarise and sometimes model these data; any errors introduced in that process are ours. Data may be preliminary, delayed, incomplete, revised after publication or interrupted without notice. Live views show the data as last received and may not reflect current conditions.

Use of these data does not imply that any agency or data provider endorses Global Systems Lab, its simulators or its conclusions. Agency names are used only to identify sources.

4. Models, projections and interpretation

Simulators are simplified representations of complex systems. Their outputs depend on assumptions, inputs and choices that may be wrong or incomplete. Projections, probabilities, odds, forecasts and scenarios describe what a model produces under stated assumptions; they are not predictions of what will happen and carry uncertainty that may be larger than shown. Interpretation in Transmission posts reflects our analysis on the date of publication and may become outdated. Figures and numbers are rounded, and posts are not updated continuously.

5. No professional advice

Nothing on this site is professional advice of any kind, including scientific, engineering, meteorological, geological, medical, legal, financial or investment advice. Consult a qualified professional before acting on any information you find here.

6. No warranty

The site and all content, simulators, data and downloads are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any warranties of accuracy, completeness, timeliness, reliability, availability, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement, to the fullest extent permitted by law. We do not warrant that the site will be uninterrupted or error-free.

7. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Global Systems Lab, its parent organisation BioCryptia, and their owners, contributors and partners are not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special, exemplary or punitive loss or damage, including loss of life, injury, property damage, lost profits, lost data or business interruption, arising from or related to the use of, reliance on or inability to use the site, its content or its data, however caused and on any theory of liability, even if advised of the possibility of such loss. You use the site and its content at your own risk. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

8. Re-use, citation and attribution

You may cite and link to our content. If you reproduce figures or quote our analysis, credit Global Systems Lab, give the publication number and link to the original, and keep any stamp or watermark intact. You must not present our content as official, as endorsed by any agency, or as suitable for the uses listed in section 1. Third-party data remain subject to the terms of their providers.

9. Corrections and changes

We correct material errors when we find them and mark the change on the affected post. We may change, suspend or withdraw any part of the site, and update these terms, at any time. The date below shows the latest revision; continued use of the site means you accept the current terms.
